Banyoles–Rocacorba Gravel Loop: The 68 km Test

Ride the official 68 km Rocacorba and Adri loop with the right tyres, water reserve, timing gate and respect for its road descent.

The Rocacorba and Adri gravel loop is not the famous paved ascent with a token dirt approach. It is a demanding 68 km circuit that leaves Banyoles through mixed surfaces, reaches the mountain from the Sant Gregori and Adri side, then returns on road. Fitness opens the route; water, tyres and disciplined braking finish it.

Numbers before scenery

  • Start: Banyoles lakefront near Passeig Darder.
  • Direction: Banyoles → Medinyà area → Sant Gregori → Adri → Rocacorba → paved descent → Banyoles.
  • Distance and climbing: 68 km and 716 m of ascent on the current municipal route page.
  • Time: 5–7 hours including navigation, food and regrouping.
  • Difficulty: officially high; mixed tracks demand more than the elevation total suggests.
  • Bike: gravel bike with around 40 mm tyres, low climbing gears, two bottle cages and reliable disc brakes.

Banyoles tourism’s official route page provides the GPX and specifies that the route descends from Rocacorba to Banyoles by road. It listed 68 km, 716 m ascent and high difficulty when checked in August 2026. Download the current track; older third-party versions report different climbing totals and may use different sectors.

Leave Banyoles with the bike already settled

Collect a rental the evening before when possible. Confirm tubeless setup or spare tubes, brake-pad life, gearing, pedals, helmet, pump, plugs and a chain tool. A day rental commonly falls around €35–65, while delivery, carbon upgrades, insurance and recovery can raise the total. Budget €50–100 including food and spares.

Ride the first lakefront kilometres as an equipment check. Saddle pain, rotor rub or an uncertain cleat should be fixed before the route turns south. The flatter opening is not permission to push the pace; it exists to preserve legs for the upper approach.

An overnight makes the early start much easier. Compare Banyoles hotels within rolling distance of the lake, checking secure bike storage and early breakfast rather than choosing only by room view.

Medinyà and Sant Gregori are the low-country work

The lower portion mixes compacted paths, quiet roads and junctions where navigation matters more than gradient. Agricultural tracks remain working access. Slow for walkers, dogs, farm vehicles and blind bends, and close every gate exactly as found.

Carry the GPX on a dedicated device or offline phone, plus a power reserve. Route markings may not support every turn, and a missed junction can add road kilometres before anyone notices. Regroup after complex intersections instead of stopping across them.

Eat before the mountain. A sandwich, banana and carbohydrate portions are more useful than waiting for a perfect café. Any refill used around the lower settlements should be treated as the last dependable opportunity unless a current local source confirms otherwise.

Adri is the commitment gate

At the approach to Adri, stop and assess the whole group. Continue only with adequate water, at least two hours of daylight beyond the expected finish, functioning brakes and riders who still control the bike cleanly on loose ground. The official “high” rating applies to the route, not only its hardest metre.

The correct bailout is the lower road network back toward Banyoles. Take it while the choice is simple. A rider short of water or already cramping will not recover merely because the summit is now the prestigious option.

After rain, shaded gravel can remain soft and rutted when the lakefront is dry. Pushing a short pitch is an ordinary gravel decision; churning through wet ground and widening a trail is not. If repeated hike-a-bike begins early, turn around.

Rocacorba saves its risk for the end

Use the lowest gears before cadence collapses, leaving space between riders so a sudden dismount does not create a pile-up. E-bike users must monitor battery under sustained load; a heavy machine without assistance is a poor companion for the final kilometres.

At the top, add a layer before stopping for long. Sweat and exposure cool a rider quickly. Check tyres and brakes before the paved descent, close zips, secure bags and put both hands where full braking control is available.

The descent is not recovery. It is shared public road with bends, surface changes and possible traffic. Hold a speed that preserves sight distance, never cross the centre line and regroup only in a proper pull-off. Fatigue makes late braking and target fixation more likely precisely when the surface becomes faster.

Heat, rain and the shorter day

In warm weather, begin at first light and carry two large full bottles, more if conditions demand. There is little value in reaching exposed ground during the hottest hour. If forecast heat is already severe, choose a shorter Pla de l’Estany circuit.

Rain changes both gravel traction and the road descent. Cancel or switch routes when thunderstorms, saturated ground or poor visibility remove safe margins. A low loop through the surrounding plain gives useful riding without pretending to be a reduced Rocacorba summit day.

The route is successful when every rider returns to Banyoles with brakes, concentration and daylight in reserve. The summit photograph is optional; the water gate at Adri and the disciplined descent are the decisions that make the loop complete.
